April 11th | Designing Type for American Indigenous Languages with Manuel López Rocha
In this session, we’ll be speaking with Manuel López Rocha about Designing Type for American Indigenous languages, with a focus on the Mixe language and a broader conversation around supporting the many Indigenous languages of the Americas. We’ll explore the linguistic and cultural considerations involved in designing type for underrepresented languages, the complexities of diacritic construction and placement, and the importance of collaborating with Indigenous communities throughout the design process. What does it mean to co-create typefaces with language users? How can typography contribute to language preservation? What challenges do designers face, and how can we ensure typographic inclusivity beyond dominant languages?

April 4th | Drawing Extended Latin with Aleksandra Samuļenkova
In this session, we’ll be speaking with Aleksandra Samuļenkova about Drawing Extended Latin, focusing on the design of diacritics and additional Latin characters essential for multilingual typography. We’ll discuss how diacritics shape readability, impact visual rhythm, and reflect linguistic diversity—moving beyond basic Latin. We’ll also examine the cultural and historical significance of characters such as ß, ł, Ø, and æ, and the challenges designers face in creating type that supports a wide range of languages. What makes a well-designed diacritic? How do we balance tradition and innovation? And how do the needs of language users inform type design decisions?
